My connecting flight from Memphis to St. Louis last night was canceled, so I got to spend the day today with mom and my step-dad before flying out this evening. While I was in town, Mom and I went to see Blades of Glory, which was highly amusing.
I also had the distinct displeasure of having a relatively well-known political scientist go after me for having the temerity to treat Daron Shaw’s measure of campaign resource allocation as valid. I’m not sure if I scored any points by standing my ground or not, to be honest—I pointed out that it appeared in a top-3 journal, so presumably the reviewers lent some credence to the measure; that Shaw was a tenured professor at the University of Texas, so presumably he wasn’t an idiot; and that his results were consistent with other scholars’ measures.

Wow. Just how many miles have you accumulated this interview season? Will you be in Chicago for the MPSA? Brian will be there with me.
I don’t have an exact mileage count, since two interviews were on Southwest where they don’t do things by miles. But definitely a huge number.
Yes, I’ll be at Midwest—I get in Wednesday night and fly out Saturday night. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to meet Brian this time!
Cool. We get in Wednesday night, too, via Midway. If you don’t have to be up early Thursday, we could grab a beer Wednesday night before the festivities begin. You have my number. Call us Wednesday. I have panels Thursday at 4, Sunday a.m. We have tickets to the Cubs Friday afternoon and dinner plans that night. We haven’t made lots of other plans—Brian has some school work to do.
I arrive Midway as well; I should get to the Palmer House 8:30ish. I have an 8:00 panel Thursday, which I’m chairing… so presumably all I need to be able to do is look at a watch and yell at people when they don’t stop talking on cue. So beer sounds good Wednesday night, and I doubt I’ll have much trouble getting Scott to tag along.
