Joe Lee Done

When your team has already lost to East Carolina and a team that just got its ass whipped by perennial SEC-cellar-dweller Kentucky, it’s probably time for a change; at least, that’s apparently Memphis coach Tommy West’s thinking as he cans well-travelled defensive guru Joe Lee Dunn.

Would that Coach O could fire his defensive coordinator… except, well, that’s Coach O. D’oh.

I’ll argue with you on two points…

1. The timing of JLD getting fired is awfully odd. Memphis lost to ECU because their QB threw 5 INTs; two of which were ran back for TDs, and one other led to a very short TD drive. While the rush defense is giving up 5 ypc, Martin Hankins lost that game for Memphis, not the defense. I really like Tommy West, but he made JLD a scapegoat by firing him two days after the QB he’s hyped since he transferred after the 2004 season threw 5 INTs.

2. Kentucky whipped Ole Miss’ ass in the only place it counts, the scoreboard. If you replay that games 10 times and Ole Miss gets 400 total yards each time like we did Saturday, we win at least 9 of the games. There are very few teams you’ll beat committing 5 turnovers and 12 penalties, two of which led to TDs being called back. The penalties are probably mistakes caused by playing way too many freshman, but there is no excuse for fumbling 6 times.

The team I saw Saturday against Kentucky is eons better than what I saw the previous week against Mizzou.

I’ll have to take your word about the Kentucky game… I didn’t get to see it in St. Louis (just as well I didn’t fork out for tickets to travel to Lexington).

It is strange that Tommy fired JLD so early in the season… maybe he’s worried about getting Cutcliffed (v: to be fired for not firing one’s own subordinates) for being too loyal to his staff. I wonder where JLD will turn up…

Yeah, we went to the Brookhaven Pub and watched it. The Auburn/LSU game was awesome in HDTV, but needless to say, the Ole Miss PPV was not in HDTV, but we were right up close and Romaro Miller was at the next table (I can all but confirm any rumors that used to float around about him)... Ordering the game at home would have been $40, so for $50 including tip, Annie and I went through 4 or 5 buckets of beer, chips and cheese, and cheese fries, including the game on a much nicer TV than I have. A healthy early evening it was not.

I enjoyed Auburn/LSU and Florida/Tennessee in HD. I think I watched a few other games as well.

I probably wouldn’t have shelled out $40 for the PPV anyway… that’s a little steep for a football game (I think a full day of GamePlan is only $20!).

By the way, I’m about 90% sure I’ll be down for Georgia. I guess I’ll just blow off homecoming weekend at SLU… $10 to see Rhianna just doesn’t do it for me.

If you all you get for $10 is seeing her, yeah, I guess it’s not worth it…

The UGA game is the always popular 8pm central kickoff. Oh joy; oh rapture; oh bliss!
