Poet/president ponders potential Panther peril

Here’s the statement of President Brodhead regarding the planned demonstration by the “New Black Panther Party” adjacent to the Duke campus on Monday—when I happily will be safely 800 miles away in Saint Louis.

Chris, it sounds as if you will be happily away from the Black Panteresque demonstration.

For those who are on or around campus. Please be careful. Back in the day, I happened to be close to a demonstration gone awry. It’s very strange how what seems to be a peaceful demonstration suddenly turns into conflict with very high emotions.

Best wishes.

We’ve all read that most crime against blacks is perpetrated by blacks. It is in large part traced to poverty brought about by lack of education.

Rather than protest at Duke tomorrow, the “New Black Panthers” would be of greater service to the community if they followed the lead of many Duke students who volunteer in Durham’s public schools, teaching children to read.

Jim, I am sure most of those thugs have criminal records. They likely seek violence too. That’s why they look, dress and arm themselves the way they do. I do not expect any positive contribution to society from them.

I believe that the new panthers are well spoken and i know they are capable of making plenty of “positive contribution ” to society i believe that many are just intimidated and assuming they “probably have criminal” backrounds i expect not to hear much about this within the media because they arent airing the live footage from CNN of them protesting in front of Duke on any other station. many are unaware of there presence
