One down, 45 (or 46) to go

We can start whittling the list of potential indictees down: the New York Times reports that our two lucky winners of a free perp walk do not include the most infamous figure in the case thus far:

Glen Bachman, the lawyer for Ryan McFadyen, a lacrosse player who was suspended from the university after sending a vicious email related to the party, confirmed that two players had been indicted but said McFadyen was not one of them.

For the other 45 or 46 players (depending on whether or not the alleged victim is still sure her attackers were all white), here’s the list of countries the U.S. doesn’t have extradition treaties with. Of course, I suspect anyone who actually did commit a rape in this case already knew that and is probably on his way to Andorra as we speak, whether or not he has actually been indicted.

Update: Scratch another player from the list; down to 44/45:

Butch Williams, who represents team captain Dan Flannery [who ordered the strippers and was one of the three leaseholders on the party house], also said prosecutors told him that his client was not among those charged.

Nothing from Joe Cheshire regarding his client, Dave Evans (another of the co-captains), yet; the implication is that Robert Eckstrand, who represents most of the team members, is counsel for at least one, and probably both, of the indictees.

Just to be clear, you’re not providing that link with the intent of facilitating or encouraging any Duke student facing felony charges to flee N.C./U.S. jurisdiction pre-arrest, are you? If so, that would be one of the least intelligent things I’ve ever seen done by a professor, and that’s saying a lot. But I take it you’re just being sarcastic and ironic… only it’s not too terribly funny, given that flight is a likely a serious risk in this case, as you point out. And if that happens, Duke’s image will be officially in the toilet nationally, a disaster that will only be fixable through Stalinist purges of the Duke administration… let’s all hope these arrests go smoothly and painlessly.

It’s a joke (partially based on some of the paranoid stuff that people said at the NCCU forum last week). If anyone were going to flee the country, (a) they wouldn’t be looking on my blog for advice and (b) they’d have done it last month while Nifong was still stomping all over his johnson in public.

Chris,

I am still wondering about the DNA thing. Maybe it was explained somewhere and I missed it, but what players’ DNA was compared to? Was anything found on her? Sperm? Hairs? Does it mean she did have some sort of contact with somebody? And whose it was then? And does it matter?

The media seem to skip over this issue.

I saw you on TV. Sound quality at first was a bit iffy, but overall transmission was quite good.

I heard someone say that other DNA evidence than the results Nifong released last week was presented to the grand jury, but I don’t remember where I heard it (one of the local newscasts, I think).
