C3

James Joyner links to an AP article about Coca-Cola’s plans to launch a new product in June, called “Coca-Cola Zero.” He asks:

It’s unclear why Coke Zero will be different from Diet Coke or Coke C2.

Well, the obvious answer is that C2 is not a zero-calorie soda; it’s just half the calories of regular Coke. Diet Coke doesn’t taste anything like Coke. So, the moral of the story is that a “diet Coke” that tastes like real Coke would be worth having; according to Coke’s press release, that’s the plan:

“Coca-Cola Zero is exactly what young adults told us they wanted – real Coca-Cola taste, zero calories and a new brand they can call their own,” said Dan Dillon, vice president, Diet Portfolio, Coca-Cola North America. “Young people today do not want to compromise on flavor or calories and we think Coca-Cola Zero’s taste and personality will appeal to them.”

There’s a product website here, of course.

I suppose C0 won’t have aspartame. Will it have sucralose?

(I am amazed that C2 manages to tone down the aspartame’s bitter taste. It still doesn’t taste like a real Coke. But it’s preferable to Diet Coke. And any cola is preferable to a regular Pepsi.)

If it’s got Coke Classic’s taste, no sugar and no carbs, it’s my Nirvana. Bring it on!

Alan: according to the press release, it’ll be a mix of aspartame and ace-K.

Those who prefer the Pepsi side of the fence may want to try Pepsi One, in my estimation the best-tasting diet soda on the market today.

Though I will be trying out Coke Zero…

If Pepsi had any sense, they’d sh*tcan the current formula for Diet Pepsi and fill those cans with Pepsi One, which is almost indistinguishable to me from Diet Coke and much, much better than Diet Pepsi. That’d make the diet cola race a virtual tie, IMHO (until Coke Zero’s release if Coke Zero does indeed taste like Coke Classic).

Call me when they start talking about RC Cola.
